Muskego Crit Race #1
Trying to get some cheap upgrade points, I jumped in the Masters 3/4 race early in the day, and thought I would have a real chance of winning a race. I wasn't looking to break away early, but when Brian got caught from his own break 22 minutes in (45min+2), I countered because it was the gentlemanly thing to do. I was off the front solo for half the race. I dangled out there, and just kept going, thinking just take it a lap at a time. It didn't feel like I was out there that long, but I looked up and they were telling me 5 to go. I was starting to run out of gas, and I got caught with 4 to go, oh well. I got back in, and tried to get my bearings for the finish
On the bell lap I got back to the front with Brian again leading out to the last turn. This is where I screwed up. I remember seeing Brian accelerate, and I should have let him tow me farther, but I went by him right away, almost a quarter mile to the finish. I thought I could hold it, and I was......I looked back, I had a gap, and I was convinced I was going to win...they can't catch me! Just as I went into the last rise I remember thinking, I'm going way too slow, I was losing steam, and finished 6th.
Race #2
Three hours later it was time for M1/2/3. I knew it would be hard when the White brothers, Andy Crater and his buddies were lining up. In addition to the regular strong Masters guys, the Pro/1/2 dudes all decided to warm up in our race. It was fast and hard, but I kept near the front, chased down guys, and just tried to be aggressive. It seemed like every other time up the climb, there was an attack. After 45 minutes, it was clear there would be no breakaways today. We were finally down to 5 laps to go, and I was happy to see it. With three to go, I was still hanging in the front, but going up the climb I stood and felt the cramp monster bite me. I maintained the last couple laps, but I knew I would have to stand up the climb in the sprint, and if I would cramp doing it, I had no chance for a respectable finish. On the bell lap I was too far back, I wanted to get to the front, and try to bury myself for the team, but I was out of gas. I didn't contest the sprint, and coasted in. Dave ended up leading out our sprinter Pete who finished second to a White brother. So if somewhere along the way, I helped keep it together for that then I was good for something.
All in all, I was happy with the day. I got some upgrade points which was the goal, and was active in the main race. The legs were normal, so last week was a proven fluke.
Dave, Scoots, and I hit up a local Mexican joint afterwards, and talked it all over a few Margarita's. The wife even showed up unannounced, and made it a good time.
Next up is Denzer, which I've never done. It's supposed to be the hardest road course of the year with a full mile climb each lap. I'd like to stay overnight, and do Wheels on Willy, but I have graduation, so they'll have to get by without me there.
Things are starting to look up....
